Afternoon Tea San Francisco-style at The Rotunda

One of my favorite things to do in San Francisco is indulging in afternoon tea. From posh places to quaint little tea rooms, it’s such a treat to get dolled up and enjoy tiers of little savory bites and sweet dessert delights with a cup of warm tea. It’s the perfect activity for a celebration or a “just because” with family, friends or your significant other (I’ve actually dragged my husband to a girly tea room before and he was totally fine with it and even enjoyed the cute food, Lol). Though nothing beats going with girlfriends because you just get to unwind and talk about everything under the sun. On a fine Saturday afternoon, I had the opportunity to see some of my girlfriends and finally experience Afternoon Tea at the Rotunda Neiman Marcus.

I’ve really never explored the Neiman Marcus store aside from the cosmetics area and shoes section so this was a new thing for me. As you head up to the restaurant, you’ll be mesmerized by all the high-end designer brands along the way: Chanel, Fendi, Tom Ford. Talk about a feast for your eyes! Jamie and I got lost at first as I thought the restaurant was at the very last floor. It’s on the fourth floor as it turns out. Jamie checked in and we waited no more than 10 minutes. We were briefly seated by the window with a partial Union Square view (due to construction) though it was nice to overlook the Vera Wang store and peek at the gorgeous bridal gowns. As we waited for another friend to arrive, we looked over our menus and enjoyed viewing the stunning, stained-glass dome ceiling.

We all decided on the Signature Afternoon Tea that comes with an assortment of savory sandwiches scones and sweets along with a tea of our choice. I chose the Vanilla Decaf Tea (Sri Lanka tea with vanilla aroma) while Jamie and Christine had Anji Tea (white tea from the Anji region). They brought us a few starters before beginning the tea service which was such a pleasant surprise! The first starter was a Chicken consommé served in a cute espresso teacup. To me, it tasted very much like a delicious chicken broth. The second starter was a fresh out of the oven popover with strawberry butter that reminded me of a creme puff shell.

Alas, a three-tiered stand of lovely delights is placed on our table.

1st tier: pesto scone, cranberry scone with sides of devonshire cream, lemon curd, and raspberry preserves.

2nd tier: deviled egg on croissant, lemon crab roll, cucumber sandwich, and chicken salad tartine sandwich.

3rd tier: blueberry muffin, chocolate brownie, red velvet cupcake, and raspberry tea cake

We were casual with our afternoon tea as we spent almost 2 hours there. Anything less would be uncivilized, right? The experience overall made for such a pleasant and well-spent afternoon in the city from the elegant ambiance to the kind, attentive servers, to the delicious, filling meal. I would definitely go back for brunch or a special occasion lunch. This is an absolute must do when in San Francisco! Since it’s a very popular place, I suggest you book in advance (1-2 weeks before). Also be sure to check out the website for their tea service hours. Visit The Rotunda at Neiman Marcus for more information. I hope you guys get to enjoy it during the holidays!
